A HIDDEN GEM

๐ŸŒธHere comes the sun and I say, it's all right!๐ŸŒธ The Beatles Scott's Island ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒธ Hello there bloggy friends! It was a lovely day here. There’s only a small clump of ice left to melt at the back of the house. Today our temperature was 55 degrees F. Sunday was so gorgeous that I took a drive to a spot that I never go to. It’s very close by and I could have walked but it’s a up and down hills type of walk. A dead end to a cove where only Summer residents live. A few lobster fishermen have moorings for boats there. The reason I decided to go up to “the Mash" (Mainese for Marsh) is because the ocean was flat calm. It has a lovely view up there of Scott’s  Island. Do you remember reading any of Robert McCloskey’s  books when you or your children were young?  MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS, BLUEBERRIES FOR SAL, HOMER PRICE, and several others. His last book was BURT DOW, DEEP WATER MAN and was about a man from Deer Isle, published in 1963. He was an illustrator and artist also. Well,

๐ŸŒธ The best climate is found in the state of Contentment. (Basford)๐ŸŒธ Walker’s Pond is still frozen over. Hello dear bloggy friends. I hope you are well and reasonably content. Today is St Patrick’s day.   I made a trip off the Island today to Ellsworth. We have a heat wave, high forties with sunshine. Two days ago we had temps in the single digits. On my way off the Island I saw people buzzing like bees on their properties shifting their lobster gear around getting ready for a new season. I stopped to take a picture of this lobster boat.  I headed across the bridge and stopped to look back toward the Island, you can see the bridge in the distance. In the little town of Surry I took my life in my hands when I stopped on a busy road to take these pictures of the stream where my father used to catch “elwives”, a type of fish used for bait in lobster traps. I took some video of the rushing water but, alas, couldn’t get it to upload to the blog. Bummer.  I did my shopping in the little cit

Good morning dear friends! Thursday, March 11 Yes, it's morning here on the coast of Maine but a dreary one. We are having a mild spell (52 degrees F) but it is soon to drop back down in the 20's again. A depressing thought, truth be told. I have been in a slump lately and that is why I haven't posted. I have caught and released 7 red squirrels in the past two weeks. I realized after the first few that maybe the same ones are returning so I released them elsewhere, about a half mile away. Then I looked out the window one morning and there were 12 of the little buggers  eating bird seed under the feeders. So, I said to Mom "We are going to have to stop feeding the birds." It is one of her favorite past times to stand at the kitchen sink and watch the activity of the birds, squirrels, and deer.  I have torn our upstairs apart trying to figure out where they are getting in. No clue. So, I think it may be time to call in the professionals. The closest, according to

Good morning dear bloggy friends! I hope you are all well. It's 5:55 AM. Temperature is 10 degrees but real feel is minus 16 because of the extreme wind that has been battering our house all night. Not much sleep for mom or myself. It's been a wild night and it's not over yet. This old house is still creaking and groaning.  I dread looking out the window to see how many shingles are off the garage roof. It's large and pretty high up and takes the full brunt of the wind in storms like this.  For two days we  had rain and warmer temps so the snow and ice has diminished significantly. So much so that when putting seeds and corn out yesterday my one boot sank into the mud up to my ankle and I went down buckets and all. That makes the fourth fall this winter, a record for even me! I was not a pretty sight when I came back into the house. I expect the deer waiting in the swamp enjoyed their pre-dinner entertainment! Aside from the weather, there's not much to report. I f
