Scott's Island

๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒธ

Hello there bloggy friends! It was a lovely day here. There’s only a small clump of ice left to melt at the back of the house. Today our temperature was 55 degrees F. Sunday was so gorgeous that I took a drive to a spot that I never go to. It’s very close by and I could have walked but it’s a up and down hills type of walk. A dead end to a cove where only Summer residents live. A few lobster fishermen have moorings for boats there. The reason I decided to go up to “the Mash" (Mainese for Marsh) is because the ocean was flat calm. It has a lovely view up there of Scott’s  Island. Do you remember reading any of Robert McCloskey’s  books when you or your children were young?  MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS, BLUEBERRIES FOR SAL, HOMER PRICE, and several others. His last book was BURT DOW, DEEP WATER MAN and was about a man from Deer Isle, published in 1963. He was an illustrator and artist also. Well, he summered on Scott’s Island just off our Island of Little Deer Isle. I remember him coming to our float in his lobster-type boat with his family to eat at my parent’s restaurant in summer for many years. He died in 2003 at the age of 88. He willed his island to Maine Heritage Trust so that others could enjoy it as much as he and his family had. His daughter, Jane, wrote a book about her father and it was published in 2011.  ROBERT McCLOSKEY: A PRIVATE LIFE IN WORDS AND PICTURES.

So, moving along...Today was another lovely day. My friend who lives a hop, skip and a jump from me, and, whom I haven't seen in about 8 months, and I decided to go out to lunch at Harbor Cafe in Stonington. It was a lovely lunch and catch up. We both had shrimp and it was delicious! I brought Mom home a scallop chowder. Tomorrow I will be driving down again to do the food shopping and pharmacy run. It's supposed to rain for the next couple of days.

You might be wondering about our red squirrel problem. I still have it. I did call pest control and they transferred me to their wildlife department. The nice man explained their cost of services. $199 for the first visit to assess the problem. After that their cost for actual services to take care of the problem starts at $1200.00 and goes up from there! Needless to say I thanked him for his time and hung up. So, I don't have much else to report except that I am still catching and relocating.๐Ÿ˜

Harbor Cafe is the red roofed building.

And there you have it!
Take good care of yourselves,

  1. Good grief. I would catch and relocate too. Who could afford that for squirrels?

The little island is a treasure for sure!

  3. Well, if only you got what the birdie wished for, you could afford pest control!

  4. Wow that pest control does sound expensive and I don't blame you for trying to sort it yourself. I always enjoy seeing your photos as you live in such a beautiful place.

  6. Wow, don't send your kids to college, send them to pest control school. Never read any of his books but that was a gracious gift he left. what a delightful looking island.
That playground equipment is purely scary.

  8. Oh, I so love your photos, as well as the way you write. I wish I could help you with the squirrel problem. I wonder if there is anything that is a deterrent to them...something they do not want to smell, etc?

Glad you got to have lunch with your friend.
